Welkom op Dunmaglass, de website van de familie MacGillavry in Nederland. Dunmaglass is de naam van het landgoed ten oosten van de rivier de Farigaig bij Inverness in Schotland, dat meer dan zes eeuwen in bezit is geweest van de Clan MacGillivray.
Welcome to Dunmaglass, the website of Family Mac Gillivray in The Netherlands. Dunmaglass is the name of the estate East of the River Farigaig near Inverness in Scotland, which was in the possession of Clan MacGillivray for more than six centuries.
De Nederlandse tak ontstond toen William MacGillivray, geboren in 1751 en schrijnwerker in Elgin, in 1781 Schotland verliet en dienst nam bij de Schotse Brigade in de Nederlanden. Een jaar later werd de Schotse Brigade ontbonden en voegde William zich bij de regelmatige Nederlandse troepen. In 1787 eindigde zijn dienstverband en vestigde hij zich in Zwolle, waar hij Engelse lessen ging geven. In de burgerlijke stand liet hij zich inschrijven als William Mac Gillavry, sindsdien de spelwijze van de Nederlandse tak. In 1795 trouwde hij met de eenentwintig jaar jongere Elisabeth Landevelt en zij overleefde hem met 42 jaren. Het echtpaar kreeg vijf kinderen, drie dochters en twee zonen:
Hendrik Mac Gillavry werd geboren in 1797, hij was de eerste die naar Nederlands-Indië trok en de familie generaties lang tot een 'Indische familie' maakte. Hij maakte snel carrière, eerst als (adjunct-)griffier bij de Hoge Gerechtshoven, later in het Binnenlands bestuur. Hendrik werd uiteindelijk resident van Surakarta. In 1819 trouwde hij met Anna Theodora Maurisse, ze kregen zeven kinderen: twee dochters en vijf zonen. Hij was 37 jaar toen hij overleed aan cholera in 1835.
Hendrik en Anna’s zesde kind Alexander Donald, geboren in 1829, overleed kinderloos in 1868. De andere vier zonen zorgden voor de uitgebreide familie MacGillavry. In de familiestamboom worden ze aangeduid als 'De Vier Takken'.

The Dutch Branch came into existence when William MacGillivray born in 1751, cabinet maker in Elgin, left Scotland in 1781 in the service of the Scottish Brigade bound for The Netherlands. A year later the Scottish Brigade was disbanded and William joined the regular Dutch Army. In 1787 he mustered out and he established himself in Zwolle, where he earned his living teaching the English language. He had himself recorded in the Civil Registry as William Mac Gillavry, which has been the spelling for the Dutch Branch ever since. In 1795 he married Elisabeth Landevelt, who was twenty-one years younger than he and outlived him by 42 years. The couple had five children, three daughters and two sons:
Hendrik Mac Gillavry was born in 1797. He was the first to migrate to the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia) and for several generations made the family an 'Indo-Dutch family'. He had an accelerated career, first as Adjunct Clerk at the High Courts, then at the Ministry of the Interior and finally as Resident of Surakarta. In 1819 he married Anna Theodora Maurisse. They had seven children, two daughters and five sons. He was only 37 years old when he died in 1835 of cholera.
The sixth child of Hendrik and Anna, Alexander Donald born in 1829, died childless in 1868. The other four sons took care of generating the extended Family Mac Gillavry. In the Family Tree they are referred to as 'The Four Branches'.
